[WT-support] Work around for bug in Win-test

Our multiop uses 10, K3's and only one has the DVK built in. All the VHF
contests use mixed mode.

As far as Windoze 7, I'm using the built in sound on ASUS motherboards and
haven't seen any major issues although the entire sound card setup and
interface changed dramatically between XP and 7 so it doesn't surprise me
there are issues. We still use XP at our contest station since we only have
P4 proc's.

Terry,

Thanks for providing the additional details. Using OPON and recording one
set of messages per operator should work well.

Windows 7 sound cards are usually unusable because of unacceptable latency
introduced into the mic. monitor circuit due to digitization delays. So if
you're on a Windows 7 machine and you can plug a mic. and headphones into
the same sound card and listen to your own mic. audio without any audio
delays at all, I would like to know exactly what type of sound card and what
Windows device settings you are using, because I have never seen a Windows 7
system where that worked (Windows XP is not a problem).

If you install a KDVR3 voice keyer module into the K3s, you can use my K3
scripts <http://bit.ly/wtscripts> (K3scripts.zip) to run that DVK from
Win-test, bypassing the Windows sound cards completely. But you can only
record two banks of voice messages, so recording one CQ per operator would
be somewhat less practical.

The problem you describe is rarely reported because there are only a few
mixed mode contests where the multioperator cateogry is popular (IARU, ARRL
10, what else?)

Pretty basic setup.

Win7 or XP same issue.

Many different sound cards.

Boom mic into mic input on sound card.

Output from sound card to line input on K3's.

Using sound card for DVK.

Switching modes either via radio or via software, same issue. Don't use
spots, just type SSB or CW or mode up/dn on the K3

CW generated via Win-test via RTS and DTR through DB9 on K3's which works
VERY well.

Of course plugging the mic into the radio after the CQ is recorded is a
possible work around. We would just need to have all the ops record a CQ
after issuing an OPON command.

I find it weird that no one else has ever seen this, easily reproducible and
has been the same for many versions since I first started using Win-test
right after the switch from version 3 to 4. Not a complaint, just an
anomaly. Compared to other programs, MINOR!!!

There are several possible workarounds, depending on your radio, DVK method,
keyer method, and Windows operating system. Please provide details of how
you are using Win-Test for voice keying and CW generation. I assume you are
plugging your mic. into the sound card and using Windows XP. Once you
record your messages, you can plug your mic. directly into the radio.

Also, how are you switching modes? Are you clicking on spots, using buttons
on the radio, pressing Ctrl+F1, typing "SSB [Enter]" in the logging window?

A step-by-step procedure would be helpful to understand the issues.

For some time there has been an anomaly in Win-test that is more an
annoyance than a major problem. When you change from SSB to CW and then
back, you must hit F1 to call an automated CQ before the live mic works. It
also manifests itself when going to cw and you try to use Alt-K, nothing
happens when you type. If you hit F1 to call an automated CQ on cw then hit
ESC right away, ALT-K works fine then. Does anyone know a work around for
this? This is the only issue we've had with Win-test in the last several
years, the program has become a VERY stable product, THANKS LAURENT!!!!!
