[WT-support] DELAYS

   Hi fellow contesters,

Interesting to see/read Don's post about delay of entering a callsign during the contest.

We experienced the same in latest WPX CW contest on some of our computers at LZ9W ( we are M/M station)

But we do not use wireless keyboards and our PCs used for logging are not linked to Internet, so no lack of RAM either.

We changed most of PCs before the contest, but that hardly could be the problem we guess.

It looks like it should be a WT bug of some kind which needs to be fixed.

Interesting comment about the cellphone, Bob. Yes it was on the desk.
 Doh!😩

      I've never trusted wireless keyboards.
If it's using Bluetooth, perhaps it was getting interference from a nearby cell phone, wireless earbuds, tablet or some other nearby bluetooth device.
Did you have your cell phone resting near the keyboard?

If you can replicate the problem with a wired keyboard, then we can rule out that issue.

I've never seen pauses like that unless there are tons of programs running in the background, forcing Windows to swap virtual memory to disk .
4GB isn't considered a lot of RAM these days for
Windows 10.
If you had a web browser open at the same time, with lots of open tabs and tons of web sites, that could chew up considerable amounts of virtual memory.

You can use the Windows Task Manager to explore memory utilization if that's the suspected issue.

But I suspect it's the wireless keyboard.

I am not suggesting this is a Win-Test problem, but I just want to check no-one else here has experienced this over the last weekend’s contest.

On CW, I found that the logging entry field would randomly freeze for short periods, and despite typing the callsign of a new contact, it would not appear for a few seconds in the window.
My first thought was that the batteries in my wireless keyboard might be flat, so I fitted new ones – no change.
I also saw a post recently that DX log had a few issues perhaps when the cluster traffic was very high and I wondered whether W_T had developed an issue. Of course traffic was high this weekend and although I had a separate computer on the network handling the link to VE7CC, the logging computer still had to accept the incoming spots over the network. So I killed the ethernet link and that made no difference either.

My next thoughts turned to a Microsoft update earlier in the week and I wonder if something has happened behind the scenes which affects Win-test. Finally I had installed version 4.31 this week, which could perhaps have introduced an issue.

I did think whether there was an RF problem with the wireless keyboard being affected by the high RF fields around the shack. This is unlikely as I’ve had that keyboard operating here for several years without any problem.

The effect seemed rather like the computer (an i7 with 4Gb RAM) was running out of processing capacity. But I would expect that also to affect the tempo of the outgoing CW, but that did not happen. No change in rhythm – totally normal.

So my question is “has anyone had a similar problem this week in the contest – or indeed seen a similar problem with W-T in the past?”

If this is a first, then I must have some strange fault condition which will take a bit of work to find, I think.
