Thank you to N6TV and W9ZRX. I will go for an upgrade then and try to
migrate the settings.

Should I upgrade to Version 4 or ask for a new registration code for the ver
3.27 that I am currently using?
You can see all of the features that were added to Version 4 here:
http://docs.win-test.com/wiki/Release_Notes
then make a decision based on that. However, since Version 3 is not
supported any more, I would definitely recommend an upgrade.
If you really want to just get another version 3 registration code, and you
never purchased or received a free upgrade to version 4, then you should be
able to request a new version 3 registration code for free just by using the
web site. Just follow the procedures in the Win-Test Easy Registration
Guide <http://bit.ly/registerwt> , starting with Step 4.
I see that the upgrade price is 20 Euros so it's not too expensive but would
it cause me more problems in setting it up from scratch? Can I migrate the
settings from Ver 3.27? I guess probably not.
See <http://lists.f5mzn.org/pipermail/support/2009-July/077694.html> this
post for tips on migrating your configuration files from Win-Test 3 to
Win-Test 4. It is a cumbersome manual process. Note that you need a
different reg. key for V4, which you must obtain after installing V4. Use
the traditional method (Help | Regsiter Software ...).
We were able to save and copy most of the progs from the faulty HD so I have
copied WT3.27 onto the new drive but it won't run and it wants a
registration code.
It should run OK in demo mode without a registration key, but you can always
download and completely reinstall the latest copy of version 3 from
http://download.win-test.com/v3/bin
and try again.
