Can you confirm the serial adapter working independently? Maybe using
Hyperterminalen.

I had ugly annoying trouble with the drivers in Windows the last time
I tried to use a USB to serial adapter there. In the end the solution
for me was to reboot without adapter connected, reinstall the driver,
reboot, and then when connecting the adapter it worked.
