I seem to remember getting a similar phenomenon when I was accidently in M
(Mult station) mode rather than R (Run station) mode.

I have noticed in the WPX RTTY contest that some, but not all of the
prefixes I have worked before show "!!!!" for the multiplier.  Is that
normal?
