You don't even always need VAC. Several audio cards allows the "mixer 
output" to be used as the input source for Audacity (or any other sound 
app). The Realtek ALC 662 chip embedded on my current MoBo does it, for 
example. Just mute the other inputs in the Windows mixer dialog.
