Well, here is the problem, and I think this must be a  bug.

I only had the N+1 window open and not the check partial. When the 
latter is open the default.dta file IS used, but NOT in the N+1 window 
where the contest specific file is maintained. The help file says 
specifically:

<<it will be used as default file for
partial and N+1 checks instead of contest-specific default file.>>

note BOTH files are quoted. I checked this in all the contests I have 
used with WT, and since this is quite a small number, also checked a 
couple of new contests, and the result is always the same. I cannot 
believe that this is a function of the default.dta file structure itself 
if it works in the N+1 window, but if you need a  copy I can send it to 
you. I know that several other people are also using the same file which 
is the same one as is used in N1MM.

The problem is not urgent as I can live with having both partial and N+1 
windows open.
