FYI, I don't know much about the "RSGB Data" contest, but you might find it
more convenient to use "automatic" Run/S&P switching.  Just check "Sprint
Exchange logic for the Insert key", documented

Then maybe you won't have to press [Ctrl-Tab] at all.
