Hi John,
further to my mail just sent to you via the WT-support reflector I do include a copy of the latest info (dated 13-Aug-07) I received from Joe Subich concerning this annoying problem for your reference.
Let's keep our fingers crossed....

Here comes his info:
Rudolph,
The issue of uncommanded speed changes with WinTest and
microKEYER is absolutely an issue in the way WinTest
controls WinKey speed. It happens also with a "bare"
K1EL WinKey and it does not happen with the other leading
software.
Well over a year ago I posted information on eliminating
the issue. Other authors have made use of that data to
eliminate the uncommanded speed changes but it appears
that WT has not. The key portions of that information
include:
1) A program should never use "Change Speed Buffered"
(<1C nn>) except for temporary changes within a
macro and their use should include a "Cancel Buffered
Speed Change" (<1E>) command at the end of the
macro.
2) always add a WinKey "Set WPM SPEED = 00" after
the macro has completed (when WinKey signals PTT
released or busy=0) to reset the speed to that
set by the pot
3) always include a "Set WPM Speed" command at the
start of a macro to sync WinKey to the speed the
program believes it should be.
4) (helpful but not required) poll WinKey for the
current speed whenever receiving an unexpected
(uncommanded) speed change. This will help to
filter "excessive" speed changes due to RFI
5) (helpful but not required) ignore speed changes
from WinKey of +/- 1 WPM as this could be "noise"
in the speed pot A to D converter.
The microHAM implementation of WinKey is completely transparent;
Router makes no changes in any data to or from the WinKey IC.
Any speed changes are entirely generated by the application or
user.

Hi, John,
it's not a new problem. The first time I mentioned it towards the WT-development team must have been some two years ago. In V 3.18 it has become much worse than in previous versions. In my case it's almost unbearable. I have sent the development team twice a note of Joe Subich, W4TV, suggesting remidies how to overcome the problem. However, most likely the solution is so difficult to implement that a cure has not been found so far.
That is indeed very disappointing especially so since WT is in all otherwise relevant aspects an extremely trustworthy, forgiving and reliable piece of contesting software.
I won't give up hope that someday the WT-developers will be in a position to cope with the problem. If so, I'll be the first one to send them a good bottle of Bordeaux in appreciation of their success....

Subject: [WT-support] CW Speed jump with WinKey
Hi everyone
I used Win-Test v3.18 with WinKey in yesterday's RSGB 80m AFS contest and had a repeat of the problem reported in late November (after CQWW) with Win-Test and WinKey CW speed.
I had "Independent Speed between pot and computer" UN-checked. Whenever I used Alt-V or the pot to set the speed, the speed settled down for a while but then jumped up to a different, faster speed. In this case, pressing Alt-V showed the original speed (the speed I wanted) - simply re-entering the required speed brought it back to where I wanted it - for a while. Then it jumped to a different speed again.
This problem was also reported to me yesterday by G3SXW and G3WVG using a similar configuration.
I suspect that this has also been reported in these postings:
http://www.f5mzn.org/pipermail/support/2007-November/075053.html - G3BJ (G5W)
http://www.f5mzn.org/pipermail/support/2007-November/075052.html - G3NKC
http://www.f5mzn.org/pipermail/support/2007-November/075070.html - G4IRN (3X5A)
http://www.f5mzn.org/pipermail/support/2007-November/075088.html - F5MZN (TM2Y)
I see no entry for this annoying bug on Flyspray but hopefully it can be resolved for the next release?
Thanks
John
G4IRN.
