I believe the SOUND / NOSOUND option was removed with 4.19, presumably due
to many complaints that it didn't work on newer hardware.

Like you, I often used the sound as a useful first cut at a solution.

I found the sound would often improve (at least to the level of discerning
what the CW was saying, although choppy) by going into the playback setup in
Win 7 and Win 8.

Specifically (TV Bob can correct my terminology):

1. find the speaker icon in the "bar" in the lower right hand part of the
screen
2. Right click on it, select "Playback devices"
3. Double click on the "Speakers" or whatever device you're using for
playback
4. In the Properties window that comes up, select "Enhancements"
5. Select "Disable all sound effects"
6. Click out of all the OK boxes.

No guarantees, but it may serve well enough for test purposes, at least if
you have an option previous to 4.19.
