[WT-support] Followup - Fraunhofer Codec in Windows 8.1

In April, I asked the if anyone was using the Fraunhofer CODEC with Windows
8.1 but received no response. Given the recent discussion re recording and
CQWW rules on other reflectors, I thought the following results might be of
general interest.

Using N6TV's guidance, I have now installed the Fraunhofer CODEC on both Win
7 (32 and 64 bit) and Win 8.1 (64 bit) computers using the Chortkeh fix
command file (below). It takes less than a minute if you don't do the
registry backup.

Results:

1. It installed easily and works great in the WT recording mode.

2. Unlike the LAME CODEC, Fraunhofer seems to be much more stable. I
can unplug and reinsert the audio feed to the computer input without causing
the Win-Test crash which occurred when using LAME.

N6TV instructions for installing Chortkeh (NOTE: I did not back up the
registry. Tried it on a 'guinea pig' laptop first and no problem. You may
want to do this if you're nervous.)

1.	Back up the registry (Microsoft's instructions for backup and
restore are here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/322756)
2.	Download the Chortkeh fix command file
<http://www.komeil.com/download/264> and "Run as Administrator" (click the
small blue link to download it, ignore the big green button)
3.	Right click on .cmd file and "Run as Administrator" to update the
registry
4.	Reboot Windows
5.	Start Win-Test
6.	See if Fraunhofer is listed. If not, restore the registry and
reboot

Recent discussions here re QSO audio extraction prompt the following

QUESTION(s):

Is anyone successfully using the Fraunhofer CODEC with Windows 8.1? If so,
how stable is it (see below) and how did you install it?

BACKGROUND.

Several years ago I spent a lot of time messing around and finally
installing (with N6TV help) CODECS.

Bottom line: Fraunhofer seemed to work best with WinXP and VISTA but I
could only get LAME working on Windows 7 (desktop & 2 x laptops) and 8 (2 x
laptops).

I now use LAME exclusively on 5 computers with Win 7 & 8. Win-Test itself
works extremely well in both (gone are the days of long waits for ComPorts
to reset and drivers to initialize).

The problems are in recording audio:

1. It's somewhat unstable in that if I accidentally unplug the audio
source while recording, Win-Test crashes and has to be restarted

2. Although the whole contest will be recorded as an MP3 file, the
synchronization with the log almost inevitably stops somewhere after 3000 to
4000 QSOs for unknown reasons.

I'm using Win-Test 4.16.0 with

- LAME MP3 Codec v0.9.2 - 3.99.5 on the Win 8 machines and

- LAME MP3 Codec v0.9.2 - 3.98.4 on the Win 7 machines.

Win-Test settings are: Sample rate 44100 Hz, 128 kBit/s

On the computer, the recording devices are set for 2 channel, 16 bit, 44,100
Hz (DVD Quality).

I'm willing to mess around installing Fraunhofer if someone can tell me they
have it working in Win 8 and it's "stable" as above.

Thanks,

Scott, K0DQ
