Recent discussions here re QSO audio extraction prompt the following

QUESTION(s):

Is anyone successfully using the Fraunhofer CODEC with Windows 8.1? If so,
how stable is it (see below) and how did you install it?

BACKGROUND.

Several years ago I spent a lot of time messing around and finally
installing (with N6TV help) CODECS.

Bottom line: Fraunhofer seemed to work best with WinXP and VISTA but I
could only get LAME working on Windows 7 (desktop & 2 x laptops) and 8 (2 x
laptops).

I now use LAME exclusively on 5 computers with Win 7 & 8. Win-Test itself
works extremely well in both (gone are the days of long waits for ComPorts
to reset and drivers to initialize).

The problems are in recording audio:

1. It's somewhat unstable in that if I accidentally unplug the audio
source while recording, Win-Test crashes and has to be restarted

2. Although the whole contest will be recorded as an MP3 file, the
synchronization with the log almost inevitably stops somewhere after 3000 to
4000 QSOs for unknown reasons.

I'm using Win-Test 4.16.0 with

- LAME MP3 Codec v0.9.2 - 3.99.5 on the Win 8 machines and

- LAME MP3 Codec v0.9.2 - 3.98.4 on the Win 7 machines.

Win-Test settings are: Sample rate 44100 Hz, 128 kBit/s

On the computer, the recording devices are set for 2 channel, 16 bit, 44,100
Hz (DVD Quality).

I'm willing to mess around installing Fraunhofer if someone can tell me they
have it working in Win 8 and it's "stable" as above.

Thanks,

Scott, K0DQ
