You're right. It is only useful for direct LPT port outputs (CW, PTT 
etc.) under Win2k or better (this includes XP).

Some laptops require the PC speaker to be enabled in the BIOS settings. 
With some sound drivers, you also have to enable it in the Volume 
Control. But, despite of these different tricks, some recent laptops are 
definitely reluctant to produce any sound :-(  YMMV
