Hi Oliver,
I don't know what the French word you intend to use, but try to have a look
to the navigation and/or artillery glossary.
In French what you are looking for could be named "gisement". English :
bearing. A gisement/bearing is the clockwise angle between the ship's
heading and any observed object.
