I achieve the best results (very smooth bandmap update) with the options 
"Don´t Poll" and "Use CI-V Transceive". You also will have to enable 
CI-V transceive on your IC-706 - it´s hidden in one of the menues. 
Factory default is "off".

Icom uses 8-N-1, the baudrate can also be selected in that menue.
