are the messages given out at the serial port from HTTPDXcatcher and DXTelnet the same or are there any differences?

You can take a look on this:

You will need for a serial cable between two COM ports, because neither 
WT or HttpDxCatcher can support virtual COM ports. As an alternative, 
you can also take a look to the "MixW two serial ports bridge emulation":
